![]() To really evoke the gods of sunshine and fun, the giant, open fountain could be found right in the middle, spraying its rainbow-clad mirth for anyone that needed some refreshment. The Key Arena, which offered Bumbershoot’s largest stage, is opposite the EMP. The equally-as-distracting Experience Music Project (EMP), with its fuchsia and metallic exteriors, also forms part of the perimeter. To the south is the gigantic, and gigantically absurd Space Needle, always within view, inescapable. Held at the quirky and dynamic Seattle Center, the festival grounds are worth mentioning. The biggest questions on my mind were: how packed is it going to get, just who in Seattle is going to see the musicians billed, and what about the other arts, how are those going to be implemented? We vowed to go into the festival experience with open minds. That said, I arrived on the scene with photographer and also-Bumbershoot-virgin Joe Lambert at my side. ![]() While it seems that 12 hour a day for $35 is certainly worth it, there are a good amount who complain the lack of big name acts is a hole that’s widening every year. A slow rise in response to funding cuts and an overall restructuring led to the festival’s current state: between $35 and $45 for single day passes and up to $475 for the platinum three day pass. Like many others, the $40-ish price tag is the most conflicting issue of the whole event - prices have gone up significantly since 1980, the last year admission was free. Having moved to Seattle only a year ago, I’ve been around for two of the festivals but I decided not to fork up the cash last year. With the past two Bumbershoots plagued by the typical rainy, Seattle weather, tens of thousands arrived this year eager to listen and watch music, dance, drama, and the performing arts. Throughout the three festival days - Saturday, Sunday, and Labor Day Monday - the best late summer weather the region has to offer set the stage for the acclaimed festival. Perhaps we’re nearing the end of the “well, that just happened” era, as fans are ready to earnestly embrace the wonders of fantasy and sci-fi, without being mocked for immersing themselves in the fiction. This past weekend, the 41st Annual Bumbershoot Festival rounded up Seattlites young and old to celebrate arts and culture from around the world. ![]() What’s the point of putting in the effort to craft an interesting fantasy world, only to compulsively poke fun of it? Players are more than capable of doing that themselves, but they’re certainly not going to take any of it seriously if the protagonist can’t. Part of the reason Forspoken sparked such a negative reaction might be due to the fact that the developers created a world that didn’t need to be mocked the game boasts beautiful landscapes, unique costumes and an intriguing story. There’s an argument to be made that the backlash can appear selective, and can seem racially motivated after all, Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool never sparked the same level of backlash as Mindy Kaling’s Velma, despite their near-identical shtick, constantly reminding the audience that they are in on the joke. Not everything has to be Rick and Morty hell, even Rick and Morty’s compulsive meta-commentary can be too much. Marvel still uses this style, despite the fact that the MCU audience happily accepts silly comic book tropes, and have for years now even the most recent Spider-Man movie, No Way Home, sees Peter Parker burst out laughing at the name “Otto Octavius."Īlthough, the negative reaction to the constant wisecracking of Thor: Love and Thunder shows that there’s a limit to how much self-awareness the audience can tolerate. ![]() ![]() None of this makes sense.”ĭisney’s Star Wars adopted it, to some degree ( they fly now!), and there’s a new Dungeons & Dragons movie coming out, that, from the trailer, looks far more obnoxious than Forspoken. The city is flying, we’re fighting an army of robots and I have a bow and arrow. For example, in the height of an intense battle during Age of Ultron, Hawkeye says: "Okay, look. It isn’t always horrible - this kind of humor works for a character like Iron Man - but the MCU has used this style excessively, often to its detriment. ![]()
